| To the interested student, COSMOS offers fascinating subjects of inquiry. COSMOS was established by the California Legislature to ensure that math and science enrichment would be made available to our talented high school students who excel in these areas. It is a Best Practices program.
One of our pioneering faculty members perhaps expresses this best: “The idea behind COSMOS is to take some of the brightest and most motivated students in California, put them together with some of the top scientists in the country, and let them spend a month learning, experimenting, inventing and exploring.”
Each summer since our pilot year of 2000, UC Irvine faculty and scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, high school teachers, and the COSMOS student body come together with a focus on experiencing learning for the sake of learning and self discovery. If you like to learn, just for the fun of it, there is no better place for you than in COSMOS.
Over the years, the program has evolved to meet the goals and expectations of our faculty and our students. COSMOS is a place where you can feel free to pursue what you find interesting, without the worry over exams or grades. We find that students are naturally competitive, and friendly competition, without test scores or rankings, adds significantly to the student community. COSMOS students live the life of a professional scientist, following where their curiosity takes them, with the satisfaction of discovering something new as their reward.
