[Archived 4 2023] Cluster 10: Biomedical Sciences – Clinical Translational Science: The Next Generation of Biomedical Research

Instructors:

Dr. Dan Cooper, M.D., Director, Institute for Clinical Translational Science (ICTS), UCI

Lisa Hinojosa MPH, Research Development (ICTS), UCI

Marguerite Klumb, Education Training Programs (ICTS);

Peer Medical Student Mentors; and medical and professional staff from ICTS and the College of Health Sciences.

Prerequisite: High School Biology

Course Description:

The course provides a foundational level of education in clinical research and translational science. Through case studies and presentations students will be introduced to critical thinking about research ideas, technologies, and approaches of translational science (where basic science laboratory discoveries are translated to applications at the patient bedside and the population).

The course features lectures, laboratory visits, and interactions with UC Irvine physician scientists who are actively involved in the burgeoning field of clinical and translational science. There will also be an opportunity to have peer mentoring from current medical student researchers.

Project/Presentation Requirement:
During the 4 weeks students will work in teams during the research laboratory portion of the program. By the end of the course, students will gain a greater appreciation of the challenges of team science; how physicians and health care professionals can enhance basic research; and how the value of new discoveries depend in large measure on how well they are translated into changes in the practice of medicine in our communities.
